If ever there was a dramatic makeover, this one surely takes the cake!  The full home tour of this magical weekend getaway was beautifully featured on My Domaine.  We wanted to share a few other rooms not shown in the article as there were too many areas to fit into one story.  This guest room (as shown from the previous owners) was eons away from the taste and vibe of our clients.   From Granny’s attic to modern minimalist, we stripped away the chaos to create a soothing oasis for house guests.

Bye Bye turquoise, hello perfect white.   Clean and serene, this room is now reminiscent of a spa retreat.  No clutter, no busy patterns, a clean slate layered with sumptuous textiles ready to lay back into the sweetest dreams.  A mix of butter soft cotton and linen bedding from our favorite European vendors are interchangeable and perfect for our southern California climate.  Reversible throws in pre washed linen are begging to be curled up under with a good book.

A hand made dream catcher I found through a local artisan hangs between the beds with healing quartz points to further enhance the zen filled home.  A vintage bench serves as a nightstand for a yummy candle and fresh succulents.

White linen curtains pool onto the floor and let the sunshine spill into the room.  Hide covered wood benches from our store are just the right size for the end of the beds and can easily be moved throughout the home when additional seating is needed.  A hemp rug from Turkey warms up the cool concrete floor.

There was just enough room across from the beds for a midcentury cabinet for extra storage.  This leafy beauty found its home in one of our zinc planters.  A rattan sunburst mirror is an homage to sunny Ojai and the natural feel throughout this magical weekend getaway.  I have a feeling guests will never want to leave this oasis, we sure didn’t…

XO,
D.L.

LANGUID LIVING ROOM

BEFORE | LIVING ROOM

Primary colors were no longer a primary desire in this home!  After some updates and zhushing to their formal den, the desire to go neutral spilled over into this sunny room leading outside to their beautiful backyard oasis.  Now that the kids aren’t little anymore, this family wanted their home to be a relaxed and zen filled environment, welcoming them and their guests to kick back and unwind.

Belgian Linen Custom Sectional | Vintage Marble Coffee Table | Silk Rug | #dlrhein #interiordesign

Double the Chaises, double the fun! We bid adieu to the old blue sofa, and bienvenue the fresh new custom sectional in Belgian linen.  How about those soothing walls? Pebble Beach by Benjamin Moore completely transformed the vibe of this room with a stroke of a brush.  A hand woven rug made of silk remnants is as pretty as it is soft and adds a different texture.

Fresh Flowers are a must, and these purple thistles couldn’t be more perfect if they tried.

Vintage Runner turned into Pillows | Refinished Marble Coffee Table | #dlrhein #interiordesign

The base of this vintage coffee table went from off white to grey pulling out the beautiful veins from the marble.  Our client fell in love with this vintage indigo printed runner while we were rummaging through my box of favorite things in my studio.  One of a kind and totally unique, this textile was given new life when turned into plump pillows.   I love that we saved the tassel trim and put it on two of the pillows for a playful touch.

An area that was once an afterthought is now a reading nook with this handsome vintage chair and ottoman reupholstered in navy velvet with apple green piping for a burst of contrast.  A carved wood pedestal from another room becomes the perfect side table for a glass of ice tea on a beautiful Cali afternoon.  Calm, cool and collected…OMMMMMMMM.

BEFORE | LIVING ROOM

Once the kids aren’t so little anymore, people tend to look at their homes differently.  Fabrics don’t have to be so dark, edges don’t have to be so soft.  With some beautiful mid century cabinets and bold art to anchor the room, changes to the textiles where just what the juge doctor ordered!

A striped ottoman is replaced with a vintage coffee table stained in ebony.   A smoky mirrored antique tray adds reflection to fresh cut flowers in a blown glass vessel.  A handsome update to the couch makes a dramatic difference without interupting the neutrality of this sitting room.  It is begging for someone to curl up on it with a great book!

This coffee table went from Country to Chic by staining it a rich, deep shade of ebony.  Over sized floor pillows for cuddling up by the fire and game nights with friends were made from one of my fave vintage scarves from my textile collection.

There are only two places in the world where we can live happy: at home and in Paris.   – Ernest Hemingway

Find peace and comfort in a simple master bedroom | D.L. Rhein

After completing the bottom level of one of my favorite clients homes, I was ecstatic when she said she was anxious to re-decorate her master bedroom.   A huge fan of French antiques and  industrial chic, re-purposed metal furniture and oxidized glass, I wondered what she would be open to in her bedroom.   She decided on Lilac and my brain started churning.  Romantic, peaceful, and relaxing, it  is the perfect color for a place to retire in solitude after a day jam packed with three young children.  To give it a little punch, we added some pops of blue to break up the monochromatic scheme, just a little bit.  We met to discuss the room right before my trip to Paris.  With a shared love of the city, and a color palate in hand, I couldn’t wait to get inspired and search for one of a kinds!  read more

A small loveseat + nook in the bedroom changes the entire vibe | D.L. Rhein

Timing is everything and I love when two desires cross paths at the right time.   My friend and fab aesthetician Heather Bradley, known as the Brow Goddess, needed new seating for her new home studio.  Not only is she a genius with skin care, her taste is impeccable and she wanted something fresh for her new space after a recent move.  I had two great chairs I had already upholstered a few times and she fell in love with them after a last minute house call before an event  (she is a true lifesaver).  With a new home for the chairs, I now had reason to find something to replace them with.

A sofa makeover | D.L. Rhein

While out searching for new vintage treasures, I found a perfect little couch begging to be updated.  Out with the 70’s yellow and gold floral, in with white pre-washed Belgian linen.  I wanted it to be modern, so I opted for no piping and a box seat.  I loved the tufting so I had my upholsterer add linen covered buttons to dress it up a bit.  The sofa was set on a funky platform that we knocked off and replaced with legs stained to match the color of my ebony wood floors.  It is the perfect size for the space, and even allowed room for vintage leather covered trunks I snatched up at an antique show in Atlanta this summer.  Now I have a comfy spot to escape to when I want to read, have my girls hang in my room, or pull inspiration for upcoming projects.

D.L.
