The Old Man and the Sea

11 Jul The Old Man and the Sea

“Everything about him was old except his eyes, and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated.” – Ernest Hemingway

The inspiration for our July window was spawned from a vintage oil painting I found that was very reminiscent of Van Gough.  “I am so tired of doing red, white and blue for July every year.  It’s so predictable! I’m inspired by this painting.” said my merchandiser Jess. We both agreed that it reminded us of Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, and thus an un-traditional summer window was born.

We love to mix textures and materials not only in our displays and installations, but also within clients’ homes.  This console is the perfect example of that.  Carved reclaimed wood base with a zinc top give  rustic materials a modern feel.  The simplicity of glass and white coral are clean and fresh while still making an impact.  The canvas of the sails gave me the idea to mix natural linen shades with the reflection of mercury glass lamp bases.

Neutral does not have to mean boring! The juxtaposition of speckled mercury glass reflecting on an inlaid bone tray, or wire wrapped bottles floating in a sea of polished turbo shells has me dreaming of the ocean and how the sunlight radiates off the top of its mighty waves.

This is the painting that inspired it all.  A myriad of blues and whites, even the textured details make me instantly think of the Great Big Blue, covering 2/3 of our planet.  The handmade model sailboat is a favorite of our male customers, even those who have never taken a vessel out to sea.

Blue Marlins are captured on our embroidered linen pillows and are the perfect accent to any man cave or boys room.   Their beauty is almost whimsical as they look like creatures straight from a fairy tale filled with Mermaids, Sirens, and other elusive mysteries of the sea.  Are you planning a seaside voyage this year?
