RAISING THE BAR

30 Dec RAISING THE BAR

“Just because your voice reaches halfway across the world doesn’t mean you are wiser than when it reached only to the end of the bar.” – Edward R. Murrow

BEFORE | FIREPLACE

Sometimes, a simple change can make a dramatic impact when looking to remodel your home.  Our client, a busy mother of two, bought an English Tudor and was ready to convert a room to something more modern, where she could watch movies with the kids or entertain guests in a serene setting that leads out to her wooded courtyard.  With New Year’s Eve just around the corner, we got to work lickety split!

AFTER | #marble #chevron #fireplace #remodel #dlrhein

First on the agenda was to transform the fireplace from the 1970’s into 2015.  After removing the existing tile,  rectangle marble tile from Lowe’s was laid in a chevron pattern.   The shelving and walls were re-painted in one of our old standards, Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore.  A plasma tv was hung in the new entertainment room.  The windows in here had seen better days, so we replaced the glass to let the sunshine in and allow for a clear view of the pretty patio.  Old blinds went bye bye and fresh custom roman shades made from natural materials  dress up the space without adding any fuss.

Who could resist kicking back in front of a roaring fire while reading stories with their children or a family movie night in this room?

BEFORE | Wood Bar

This bar looked more like an office space than an area fit for this evolving home.  When the structure is sound, and wood in good condition, we work with what the clients have to give them a complete transformation while still going easy on your pocketbook.

AFTER | #lacquer #bar nickel #hardware #dlrhein

Instead of replacing the cabinetry, we transformed the existing blonde wood by lacquering them in high gloss Dutch lac from Fine Paints of Europe.  Modern and simple hardware pulls from OSH were a great an inexpensive find.   The wood paneling that was climbing up the wall was dated and served no purpose.  By removing it and giving the walls a fresh coat of paint, the area looks larger and more stream lined.  A new stainless steel mini fridge from Home Depot chills wine and cheese for an impromptu gathering.

BEFORE | Wood Bar

The brown and black office motif was not working with this dreamy grey and white palatte!  The counter tops and facing of the bar needed a dramatic and cost effective face lift.  And went from this….

AFTER | #bar #remodel #ceramictile #faux bois #dlrhein

…to this!  Ceramic tiles replaced the wood and glass creating an organic, natural bar.

Ceramic Tile used to create a new custom bar #dlrhein

This “wood”  is faux bois at it’s best.  Completely realistic, these ceramic tiles can be wiped off and withstand any spills and mishaps.  The grooved white tile provides texture and creates movement in an otherwise minimalist setting and was a beautiful alternative to marble as we made that the focal point of the fireplace anchoring the room.  Stoked to enjoy her new room and start 2015 with a fresh start, our client is over the moon to be able to enjoy her house during the holidays with family and friends.  HAPPY NEW YEAR!

XO,
D.L.
