“What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter – a soothing, calming influence on the mind, rather like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue.” – Henri Matisse

BEFORE – 1970’s Couch and Chairs

This wacky couch and pair of chairs was so bad, it was good.  Attracted by its over sized shape and ridiculous comfort, I bought it right away knowing it would be perfect for someone once it received a much needed makeover.  Little did I know that someone would be me.  Desperate for more seating as my kids aren’t so little anymore, I wanted to create a comfy environment with clean lines as this would be the anchor of our living room and a place for us all to gather for movie night, Rose’s gymnastic performances,  a school presentation by Jack, or a gallery showing of Mia’s artwork.  My brain started churning and I called in my long time upholsterer to see if he could turn my idea into fruition.  The result was even better than I had imagined…

AFTER – Reupholstered couch and chairs turned into a sectional with chaise

I am a huge fan of linen, particularly pre-washed that has a good weight for upholstering.  I hit the jackpot when I found a new vendor at a textile show who makes the closest thing to fancy Belgian Linen (which I love) but for a fraction of the price.  The pillows are a mix of some of my designs, along with one of my favorite neutral fabrics, Gatto Pardo by Peter Dunham.  While I was at it, I decided to recover an old tufted velvet ottoman from my bedroom with a stenciled zebra hide.  It fits perfectly between the sections of the couch, and doubles as  a coffee table when topped with a mirrored silver tray.

This is Jojo, our family dog.  Needless to say, he fell in love with the couch too.  To avoid a mess, I had an extra piece of linen sewn to wrap around the end of the chaise where he always seemed to end up.  Now he can sit on the couch, and instead of going crazy trying to keep it clean, the linen can be thrown in the wash each week.  For over the top comfort, I threw on two sheep skins from Ikea.  Now everyone is happy, even our dog!

XO,

D.L.
