COLLECTED KITCHEN

07 May COLLECTED KITCHEN

“The kitchen really is the castle itself. This is where we spend our happiest moments and where we find the joy of being a family.” – Mario Batalli

BEFORE | ENCINO KITCHEN

Part 4 of our Encino Ranch Remodel proved to be a knockout!  After completing  the entry, the powder room, and most recently the living room,  it was time to sink our teeth into the kitchen.  The maple cabinets were blond wood against sage green walls.  This was fine when the home owners were going for a more country look, admit it – there was a time when we all fell into loving “French Provencial.”  Ready to update to something modern and light, we transformed the kitchen into a cook’s paradise.

Forget about 50 shades of grey, I love all hundred of them.  Grey can err from blue to purple to brown, therefore making it a great neutral.  Less stark than white, and less severe than black (even though it’s my favorite), grey is serene and soft.  We came up with a custom blend of Benjamin Moore paints for the perfect shade of putty.   We began by replacing all of the cabinetry and building custom drawers throughout to create much needed storage that is more easily accessible.  I strive to make things as practical as they are beautiful, so that form meets function at its finest.  The stone wall and green walls were given a complete makeover with ombred marble tile from Lowe’s.  This not only added texture, but blended all of the colors within the kitchen while giving the illusion of illumination from the sunlight spilling in.  A new hood and range was in order to prepare meals prepped on this custom built island.  Counter tops got a magnificent face lift with new slabs of Sequoia Brown Quartzite.

BEFORE | ENCINO KITCHEN ISLAND

The kitchen was cramped and this peninsula of a counter top was not helping the matter.  We removed this and replaced the needed work space with the floating island shown above.  This helped open the flow of the kitchen and created more space.  What about those lost cabinets and drawers you ask?

Problem solved!  We were super excited to be able to make use of a dead space by creating a hutch top of built in glass cabinets to display all of her fun dishware.  No counter space was lost, in fact it was increased by adding the island in the center of the room.  Chrome hardware from our favorite source in LA, Liz’s Antique Hardware always has what we are looking for in every style.

BEFORE | ENCINO KITCHEN BREAKFAST NOOK

Bye bye oak table and chairs.  See ya later iron chandelier!

Hello modern, light and spacious!  By replacing the round table with a rectangular one, it allowed for more seating and continued the illusion of a longer space.  After searching high and low with my friend, we found the perfect lighting fixture in Currey and Company’s Metro Chandelier.  A fashion scout who loves all things artful, she swooned over Tania Vartan’s Alabastro Rose.  A marbled textile with shades of pinks, greys and lavenders that add a subtle and sophisticated pop to this grey wonderland.  Tufted for style, and laminated for practicality, the seating can be wiped off in one fell swoop.  I plotzed when she sent me a picture of this insane set of marbled dishes she found while antiquing.  Before she could finish her sentence, I screamed, “YES!  GET IT NOW!”  Little did we know this collection was made and signed by famed California potter Sacha Brastoff, who worked in the film industry for years and opened a ceramics studio in 1947.  In my next life, I couldn’t have found a better fit for this fab collection flecked with gold.

BEFORE | ENCINO KITCHEN

This area wasn’t serving a much needed purpose, and is open to the living room.  We removed the upper tiny cabinets and unused wine fridge to create a desk for the lady of the house.

Practical and pretty, she can read her Women’s Wear Daily with coffee in the morning and serve cocktails to guests in the evening with the bar counter we created.  A pair of gold scissors and stapler from the Nate Berkus collection at Target add a touch of glam.

AFTER | ENCINO KITCHEN COFFEE STATION | D.L. RHEIN #coffeestation #dlrhein

A new coffee bar was created to the left of the desk to house cookbooks, teas, and treats.  A vintage french canister and marble grapes from our store, and over sized Mason Jars and love mugs from World Market will put a smile on everyone’s face when they grab some licorice.

Last but not least, we scooped up these vintage lucite chairs on one of our weekly hunts.  Polished up the acrylic and reupholstered in fabulous marble fabric, they kept the room mod and airy.  Now this is a kitchen I could come home to.  And I will, whenever I drop in to visit my bestie.

XO,
D.L.

What a fabulous, knock your socks off remodel. The transformation from drab to illuminate is really evident here. Congratulations, I am literally speechless.
