Hearts, hearts, hearts, everywhere you look. I swear they had them at Walgreens New Year’s Eve. I <3 you, you <3 me (it took me ions to figure out why people were texting me less than 3). It can all feel a little pushy, and where’s the heart in that? Still, I love the shape of the <3, and I love these unique interpretations of it.
Of course, I love my sweetheart, and my little sweethearts.
Valentine’s Day began in 496 AD, appointed by Pope Gelasius. Bring on the love poems!!
In 1797, a British publisher picked up on young men’s limitations in creating their own love sayings, and out came The Young Man’s Valentine Writer, which contained scores of suggested sentimental verses.

Sometimes a house needs a total overhaul; other times, it needs only a little zhushing… a little love, a little accessorizing. Such is the case with this beautiful home in the older section of Cheviot Hills. Complete with crown molding and bright light, it belongs to a beloved D.L. customer, V.M, who has fabulous taste all on her own.
The lovely and fabulous V.M. has been a loyal D.L. customer for years. A former CEO, a mommy, and a women’s rights’ activist, she approached us for a little freshening of her home, and we were happy to comply. We added a pillow here, new fabric there, and the zhush was on…

A signature D.L. shell mirror is just what the fireplace called for (we play with different shells, and make them custom ordered).
A new chandelier lights up the entryway.
And voilà!
How do you zhush? I’d like to know.
XO,
D.L.

Shrinky dinks… such a funny name… such a versatile material, loved by parents and children the world over. Baked in the oven, so many things can be made with shrinky dinks… favorite cartoon characters, friendship bracelets, headbands… also designer jewelry and this beautiful Asian-inspired art found on a recent adventure. We are continuously asked about our window displays: how do we come up with them? What is our inspiration? We redo our windows once a month (twelve inspirational opportunities a year), and we always consider the month at hand… spiders in October, ornaments in December. But what about January? Not so obvious.

When a design client finds us through one of our stores, and sees what our style is all about, it usually makes things go pretty smoothly. The fabulous Rachel Mumford, of Barry’s Boot Camp, was no exception. She strutted into our Third St. store and fell in love with the thing we do. We, in turn, fell immediately in love with her and her beautiful Hidden Hills home. Hidden Hills, the land of horses and Main St, ‘aint seen nothing like this.

It might be eighty degrees outside, but today we are dreaming of snow in Paris. We will bundle up in cashmere, pea coats, and scarves and look (or feel) très chic. Why Paris? Pour que non (why not)?

Farewell 2011. You brought me many creative challenges, surprising accomplishments, and blessed me with new and wonderful people.
Farewell to those that I have loved and lost; Mother(my 99 year old grandma), Bruce, and Alex. A year filled with true introspection and gratitude for health, family, and friends.
Hello 2012. Looking forward to new adventures(starting with Paris) and many more endeavors, both professionally and personally.
Hello to discovering new possibilities, embracing what really matters, being in the moment, walking beside my children, and to cuddle more, kiss more, and say lots more “I Love Yous”.
A big thank you to all of my clients, friends, associates, and family who continue to inspire and support me.

As a Jewish girl with a former Christmas line, I have often been asked what Christmas means to me. It means a lot… of warm memories… with my mom, who made stockings by hand for us, and at lively parties with extended family and friends. As a designer, of course I love the velvets and glitter. I wonder: where does the secular Christmas come from in all its festive glory? Well, after doing some D.L. digging, I was able to find that Christmas is a hodgepodge of traditions from different countries.

Christmas is almost here- please tell me it’s not too late for Ornament of the Week!
Ganesh is our ornament of the week, because he is such a charmer… and so is our hand blown Ganesh ornament.
Ganesh is one of the most recognizable of Hindu deities. He can be found standing, sitting, dancing, writing, or protecting his family. Images of him are found throughout India and Nepal, and he is worshiped in all sects of Hinduism. An elephant head and trunk, human arms and legs, and a protruding belly are his consistent features.
